Traceroute is an imperfect tool for discovering the path your data packets take. In part, this is because Traceroute can readily uncover IP addresses of backbone routers-but it's hard to get accurate geographical information on these even with a tool such as CAIDA's NetGeo. Still, you can use it to prove to yourself that outbound and inbound packets take multiple hops and different paths. Here, Traceroute was used between Willamette Valley Internet (www.wvi.com), Stayton, OR, and Craig's Data Exchange (www.cde.com) in Mount Dora, FL.
